GLOBAL PEACEMAKERS IN KENYA: KOREANS & KENYANS TEAM UP AGAIN

GLOBAL PEACEMAKERS IN KENYA: KOREANS & KENYANS TEAM UP AGAIN

June 13, 2012

Over 40 volunteers will take part in a Global PeaceMakers. The group includes 20 students from Chungju National University in South Korea, ninefaculty members including the University’s President and his wife, three journalists from a Korean broadcasting station and Service For Peace staff and volunteers from all over Africa and the US.

Volunteers will work in both of the Communities of Peace in Kenya. The first part of the program will take place in the Community of Peace of Dagoretti within its Childrens’ Garden Home and School, where we will engage in educational service activities exploring science, art, health and sanitation, physical education, and more. Also, we will engage the childrenin painting a world map inside the school.  This will help the children understand how the world has n become a Global Village and each country is located on this global village.

Then, volunteers will work in our other Community of Peace in the Kibera slums within the Bethel Primary School. This is an informal school that offers education to over 300 children in this impoverished community. The school does not have adequate classrooms; so two separate classes share the same room with one blackboard and two different teachers at any given time. The only thing that separates the two units is the rows of desks. We will provide the same Educational Service activities as first venue, plus we help to renovate the classrooms by subdividing the classrooms. This will provide a more enjoyable a learning environment because each unit housed in its own walls.

The GPM will feature fun activities like multicultural sports, cultural excursions, camping at the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro as well as a game drive in Amboseli National Park. Volunteers will have opportunities to attend the International Conference on Volunteerism at the UN Headquarters in Nairobi for our , pursue  cultural exchange activities and other surprises like a bonfire night.

This will truly be a life changing experience for all participants and  beneficiaries of the projects. We are looking forward to welcoming Chungju University back!
