Volunteers from Korea and Nepal Strengthen our Communities of Peace

Volunteers from Korea and Nepal Strengthen our Communities of Peace

October 26, 2010

Twenty-six volunteers from Korea and Nepal worked together in order to improve the educative spaces of the Dhading primary school in Nepal, as a part of the Global PeaceMakers program executed last August by Service For Peace in Nepal.

For one week, 15 volunteers from Nepal, 11 volunteers from South Korea and persons from the local community, cleaned and painted the school as well as renovated the library of the educative center in order to the children of Dhading start the new school year in a better place to receive their classes

The volunteers had the opportunity to share their values of solidarity, social responsibility and compassion with other young volunteers and people of the community aspiring to create a Community of Peace in Dhading.

“Our local volunteers want to continue visiting Dhading in the future in order to create a strong community spirit, especially with the young people whom are very inspired to turn their town into a model Community of Peace,” said Yeon Jeong Kim, SFP’s regional director in Asia.

The GMP program in Nepal included an educational workshop for orphaned children in order to offer to them a “summer of peace” through fun educational games. The children of the local orphanage also visited, together with the volunteers, the local aquatic park “Waterkingdom.”

“We have given the first steps in organizing their community. Also, they have identified their own community needs. Our idea is to continue working with three social actors: community, Service For Peace and the local government,” shared Young Ju Seo, executive director of SFP in Nepal,.

Service For Peace in Nepal has developed different social projects focused on education and health with several volunteers from South Korea to create a peace network with both countries and improve the quality of life of vulnerable communities in Nepal.
