Global PeaceMakers

Thailand, 2004

My life has been marked by summers.  I have been fortunate enough to have my summers be full of new places, new people, and adventures. Needless to say, they shaped me into who I am today.  But an especially significant summer was the one in 2004, where I participated in a volunteering abroad program called Global PeaceMakers, under the organization, Service for Peace. I was fourteen and just finished my freshman year of high school, and was looking forward to volunteering abroad, but what I have received after the program was infinitely more than I could have ever expected.

The Global PeaceMakers project was to build an elementary school in the suburbs of Bangkok, Thailand.  For two weeks, we worked outside, building the foundation and even got to paint the walls that have gone up. We were building a school for children, a place where they can grow and gain an education, full of hope and infinite possibilities to become something great for this world.  What made this program unique was the fact that there were participants from all over the world working together, including students from Korea and Japan.  And many locals would volunteer with us, cooking us meals or cleaning up with us. I made friends with the Thai locals, my homestay parents, and students who live 7000 miles away from me.  That would not have been possible without this GPM project.

Also what was impactful about this project was that it bridged the local people and monks together for a greater cause.  As a Buddhist nation, it is common in Thailand to have a local temple and Monks, but in this community, the local people and monks were in conflict with each other about a political issue.  But through this GPM project, they have put their issues aside, and joined together to build the elementary school. Their adult problems were washed away because they knew the significance of creating a new school for the children and the community’s future.

Volunteering in a new country, with people of various nationalities and cultures, was an invaluable experience. Not everyone could understand or communicate in each other’s language, but somehow, we were all able to work together and create a meaningful time.  That was when I first realized that one does not always need words to make something great happen.  We all connected with the goal of helping out a local community, so it did not matter that I did not know Japanese or Thai.  Since that summer, if I had the chance, I made sure I worked with people of different backgrounds and volunteered while in different countries.

Now, 7 years later, after graduating NYU, I have decided to spend some time giving back and volunteering abroad.  After spending 4 years of college focusing on what I want to study, what I want to gain, I am ready to give back and do something tangible and meaningful for others.  I went through the application process and was nominated for an English teaching program in the Peace Corps, a 2-year U.S. government program.  This is my way of contributing to the world, and spreading a service culture.

My volunteer service begins in June, 2012 and once again I am extremely excited for my volunteer experience to come. I will always be grateful of my 2004 summer with GPM, where I first had a taste of working with a community in a foreign country, and where I first opened my eyes and heart to be a global citizen.
